I think it is that humans populate so much that they have to depend on so many people to do things for them. the bigger the population, the more there is to do and worry about... so they entrust things to others. Many of those "others" have their own best interest at heart, not the people entrusting them.
{like the Congress, Presidents, kings, parliaments, and other leaders!} and the bigger things get, the more those people cannot be kept in check. Yet the biggest problem is Capitalism, which created bureaucracy (another word for no accountability) and promotes individuality and greed.
As long as humans see no problem with capitalism, we will continue to have problems with pollution and illness from it.
Most people don't have the ability to think outside the box and realize that a communal society where people help each other and there are not vast disparities in wealth, is a much cleaner and better way to go. In fact some people think we should do away with money altogether. That would not be a bad idea. humans seems to be more interested in outdoing other humans, the one with the most stuff wins.
I think it would be a much better idea to get rid of all the big corporations and all humans get together and figure out how we can feed everyone and live in peace and work together for the "actual" common good. Humans could thrive so much better in a world where we all protect each other.
There would be far less crime, since most crime is done by people not having what others have. If ever things do change to this, it would require a rise up of the masses and they would have to take over the corporations and say "enough".
But, how could humans ever get organized and smart enough to do that?
BTW: I am not holding my breath.
